YouTube for Small Business

I just got back from meeting with a prospective client that was very interested in using YouTube as a marketing strategy. It seems like everything online is going toward video, and he wanted to know how to capitalize on this trend.

We’ve been using YouTube for a little over two years now for one of our own businesses, and it’s been hugely successful. In fact, it’s our primary way of driving traffic to the targeted site. Our videos have almost 2.5 million views, and we are even a YouTube partner, sharing in YouTube’s ad revenue. Here’s why it works very well in this particular instance:

  • We sell a global product, so it doesn’t matter if the person watching our video lives half way across the world. We still have something to sell them.
  • Our niche is one that lends itself to “How To” videos, so it’s easy to make many short, 2 1/2 minute clips that are of value to the viewer.
  • There is an offer and a specific call to action edited in to the end of each video, “Visit www.oursite.com and sign up for our free Blueprint.”
  • We then follow up with those leads using a targeted autoresponder sequence coupled with weekly broadcast email messages.

So, how do you use YouTube if you’re a local small business that doesn’t offer a national or global product?

Well, YouTube still offers some great benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Greatly helps with search. YouTube videos rank very well in a general Google search, so if you are carefully choosing your video’s title, description and keywords, there is a good chance that your video will rank very high when someone searches for you online.
  • If you’re a little bit creative, you could think of a supplemental product or service to sell to a larger market.
  • It’s a great way to be able to easily add video to your website. Once your video is uploaded to YouTube, you can simply copy and paste the code they provide into your own web page.

How to Search Effectively

The answer to almost any question is literally at your fingertips. Type the right words into Google’s search bar and within seconds thousands, often hundreds of thousands, of answers are spit back at you. The question is: What are those right words?”

I always took searching for granted, and it wasn’t until I recently spent some time with friends and family that aren’t on the computer as much as I am, that I realized there were some simple tips that might be helpful.

  1. Ask exactly what you want - be as specific as possible.
  2. Use a lot of words - even a sentence. If you only use one or two generic terms, you aren’t going to get the exact information you’re looking for.
  3. If you’re asking a technical question, there’s a good chance Google will give you some results with links to forums. These are great places to find answers. There is always a really good chance that someone else is experiencing the same problems you are, and the wonderful people that contribute to the forums have provided a solution.
  4. Take a quick peek at the website address before clicking on the results. After a little practice, you’ll begin to recognize sites that are selling products and may not have much information. If you’re looking to buy, then that’s a different story.
  5. If you are in the market to make a purchase, don’t forget about the links on the right (the paid ones). The merchants advertising there have put a lot of research into the keywords they have chosen, so there is a very good chance that those ads will bring you to just what you are looking for.
  6. If you are looking for something specific, use quotations around the words that should be grouped together. Google will look for webpages that have those specific words, in that specific order for you.
  7. If Google isn’t returning helpful results, try the other search engines: Ask.com, Yahoo.com, MSN.com.
  8. If you are looking for specific “How To” information, try going directly to an article directory. They have thousands of articles on almost any topic you can think of. Some good ones to try are EzineArticles.com and eHow.com.

Usability - How User-Friendly Is Your Website?

For some reason, Better Homes and Gardens gets delivered every month. I don’t ever remember subscribing to it, but like clockwork - every month the new issue is in my mailbox. As I was flipping through the new July 2009 issue, I noticed the word “blogged”. Being an online marketing consultant, anything to do with the internet gets at least a passing glance. So, I went on to read the little snippet. This is what it said:

SIMPLEMOM.NET Mom Tsh (pronounced “Tish”) Oxenreider, a self-described “life hacker” and home manager, lives by the credo “when mom is doing well, the whole family thrives.” Her easy-to-navigate site is loaded with tips for clearing clutter, getting healthy dinners on the table, paring down paperwork, and finding time for yourself.

Just a quick little blurb, but two things in particular stood out to me.

  1. “…Her easy-to-navigate site…”
  2. “…loaded with tips…”

Think about it. The one word or phrase used to describe her site was “easy-to-navigate.” The phrase that was chosen describes the site’s functionality, or USABILITY - not the way it looks, but the way it behaves.

Too often in the web design/development industry, design is given more importance than the user’s experience. The internet has given complete control to the consumers. If they don’t like something about a website, they have the ability to navigate away from it, in the blink of an eye. If you are not offering the best possible experience for your visitors, you are missing the ball and your website is no longer a powerful marketing tool.

When you are in the planning stages for developing a business website, look at things from your visitors’ point-of-view. Where would they expect the navigation to be? How would they expect the links to be named? How many layers are they willing to wade through to get to the information they’re looking for? Will they be able to get back to the home page from anywhere in the site in one click? How hard is it to find your contact information? Is the ordering process seamless and instill confidence in their buying decision?

These are important points to go over when you are working with a web design team, and if they don’t want to take your customers into consideration, you may want to consider working with someone who does. Usability isn’t just a buzz word floating around, it is vital to the success of your site and possibly your business if you are making online sales.

Now on to the second point…

The short little blurb also gave a reason for magazine readers to go visit simplemom.net. Simplemom.net is loaded with tips. The more value you can offer, the more successful your site will be. Tips are a great way to drive traffic to your site, get visitors to stay on your site and return on a regular basis.

So, what can you do to make your site more user-friendly and provide better value? Business and website owners that begin to think this way and take a more customer-centric approach will see a much bigger return on their investment.

Why Choose A Professional When There Are So Many “Do It Yourself Solutions”?

There are so many programs out there now that with a little bit of html knowledge, you can get your business up online in no time and at very low cost. But what is the actual cost to your business?

There’s a good chance your website is the first impression you’ll make with a potential client. What kind of impression do you want to leave them with? Many times, with these easy, do-it-yourself solutions, you end up with a template that is exactly like many others in your industry. Wordpress For Landing Page Testing

WordPress is best known as a blogging platform, but I’ve been using it for almost a year now to handle all sorts of website demands. I have effectively used it as a Content Management System for clients that want to easily be able to perform their own website updates, I am in the process of using it to manage a complete Membership Site, and my most recent project is to use it to create multiple landing pages.

A landing page is the page that a site visitors “lands” on when they click a link. It can be a link from the Search Engine Results Page, a link from another site, a link from within the site itself, or a link that is set up specifically for an online marketing campaign.

In any case, the landing page should be set up and designed in a specific way to encourage the visitor to take a desired action, clicking on another link for further information, requesting more information, signing up for an email newsletter via a form, or even making a purchase.

Because we are trying to get a visitor to take a specific action, it is very important to test landing pages to make sure that they are converting well. This is easily done with analytics software. What isn’t as easy is designing the perfect landing page with just the right graphics, copy, colors, position of elements, and call to action. All these elements have to be tested so that improvements can be made. And with all things marketing, neither your opinion or my opinion matters - test it to find out what really works!

And with WordPress and an incredible theme that I’ve found called the Affiliate Theme, it’s never been easier. Using WordPress as the platform that the site (or landing page) is created on, the Affiliate Theme allows you to easily swap out header graphics, colors, copy, positioning, layouts, and even the call to action button.

I’ve used it on four sites now that will have multiple versions of the landing page so that we can see exactly which page is converting best, and then continue testing from there. That’s the mark of a powerful and successful online marketing campaign. To create something that works and then continuously improve upon it.

That is the way I approach online marketing campaigns. They’re not over as soon as the site is launched. Instead, we monitor, tweak and test to achieve the best results.

Time Saving Tools For Business Owners

Some days I can’t tell if I’m coming or going. Not only do I create websites and online marketing campaigns for clients, but I also run a few of my own online businesses with my husband. We constantly have new projects in the works from book writing, to membership site development, to article and video marketing, you name it - if it involves the internet and using it to create a living - we’re into it.

For the past few years, I’ve been searching for tools to help keep all this straight. We can very quickly get ourselves into multi-part projects that don’t seem like they’ll ever get completed because we have no way of keeping track of all the small pieces.

In this process we have gone from pretty sophisticated software programs all the way back to a hand written schedule in a three ring binder (which sometimes works best for us) … until now.

Until we found Torch. Torch is a project management solution that would be well suited for any business looking to keep track of bidding for projects, the important documents associated with a project, and finally time-keeping and invoicing.

This program is so simple my husband (who is not technical at all) was using it within a day or two.

When I come across a piece of software that can help with your marketing or simplify your business processes, I just want to share it.

And if you don’t think that a program like this is suited for your business, maybe it could work wonders in your personal life - especially if you are a homeowner with an almost never ending list of improvements to be made to both your house and your yard. The possibilities are truly endless.
